Volunteers work in the shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence, a serious and ongoing problem in Guatemala. Volunteers work with the children in the shelter devising and organizing educational and creative activities for children who live in the shelter or attend the Nuevos Horizontes Day Care Center. Volunteers also help with after school activities for shelter children who attend school.
Basic Spanish is an advantage
None. Volunteers must cover their travel, food and accommodation costs. The volunteer coordinators can assist with finding cheap accommodation.

Asociación Hogar Nuevos Horizontes is a non-governmental, non-denominational, non-profit, Guatemalan organization that has been working with women and children in the city of Xela since 1989.
AHNH is comprised of a network including an administrative office, a Shelter and Day Care Center. All offer support, services, and temporary shelter to women and children survivors of domestic violence and to single mothers with extremely limited financial resources. Nuevos Horizontes also looks to support communities surrounding Xela, giving training and education to men, women and children on issues such as human rights and health issues.
