SECMOL is a locally founded and run non-profit non-governmental organisation in Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas. We mainly work on reforming the local government school system, but have youth camps for Ladakhi youth, a media wing, and construction of solar-heated and solar-powered earth buildings. Please look at our website www.secmol.org for the latest on what kind of volunteers are needed.
General volunteers are especially wanted in May and June every year to help with youth camps for Ladakhi youth. All that's needed is ability to communicate in English; teaching songs, games, morning excercise/yoga/etc, painting could be an asset but not required. Teaching ice skating or hockey in January would be a unique experience, and highly valued by local youth. Volunteers with other skills should check our website or contact the volunteer coordinator. Volunteers who stay at the campus pay for basic room and board (Rs 200/day in 2007, about US$4). Volunteers who help in the Leh office pay nothing and organise their own accommodation.
