Based in the culturally diverse and engaging Thailand border town of Mae Sot, BVP supports over 100 Burmese organizations in multiple locations along the border working in key sectors such as education, health and media human rights.
BVP was founded in Thailand in January 2001 and since then has placed more than 400 volunteers whose duties have ranged from English teaching, writing, editing, human rights documentation and other related tasks. Unlike many other organizations, BVP does not charge a program fee and prides itself on the fact that many volunteers have leveraged their volunteer experience to gain full-time employment with both international NGOs and host organizations at the border. Placements are unpaid and volunteers have to cover travel, visa and personal insurance costs. Positions sometimes provide accommodation, food and local transport costs to save the volunteer the expenses of day-to-day living.
The minimum commitment for volunteers is 3 months, and volunteers are required to attend a week long orientation in Mae Sot before starting their placement. Candidates should be native English speakers, or fluent English speakers with EFL qualifications and/or relevant experience. Demonstrated knowledge of human rights or international politics is a plus.
